WOW! Free-form Friday!

Today’s tip is a poem and song to get you and your child TALKing together first thing in the morning…and all day long! Act out the words to this song…wave “bye-bye” to “yesterday” and wave “hello” to the space in front of you that might represent “tomorrow”…dramatize both a work activity and a play/fun activity. Ham it up!

calendarEven with your one-year-old, sing this song a couple days in a row, and I guarantee you’ll be asked to do it again by the fourth day, if not before. Here are but a few benefits—TALKing and THINKing and SINGing together; identifying work and play activities; learning the days of the week in order; exploring complex concepts of “yesterday,” “today,” and “tomorrow” (difficult concepts since those words’ meanings change every day!); having fun; establishing a ritual; exploring drama; and….what else does YOUR child gain from your singing this little song together every day? (Sing to tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle”)

Sunday, Sunday!
That’s today!
I’ll work on Sunday,
And I’ll play!
Yesterday is gone.
It’s done!
Yesterday I had some fun.
Tomorrow’s Monday all day long.
But NOW I’m singing Sunday’s song!

Monday, Monday!
That’s today!
I’ll work on Monday,
And I’ll play!
Yesterday is gone.
It’s done!
Yesterday I had some fun.
Tomorrow’s Tuesday all day long.
But NOW I’m singing Monday’s song!

Tuesday, Tuesday!
That’s today!
I’ll work on Tuesday,
And I’ll play!
Yesterday is gone.
It’s done!
Yesterday I had some fun.
Tomorrow’s Wednesday all day long.
But NOW I’m singing Tuesday’s song!

Wednesday, Wednesday!
That’s today!
I’ll work on Wednesday,
And I’ll play!
Yesterday is gone.
It’s done!
Yesterday I had some fun.
Tomorrow’s Thursday all day long.
But NOW I’m singing
Wednesday’s song!

Thursday
Thursday, Thursday!
That’s today!
I’ll work on Thursday,
And I’ll play!
Yesterday is gone.
It’s done!
Yesterday I had some fun.
Tomorrow’s Friday all day long.
But NOW I’m singing Thursday’s song!

Friday, Friday!
That’s today!
I’ll work on Friday,
And I’ll play!
Yesterday is gone.
It’s done!
Yesterday I had some fun.
Tomorrow’s Saturday all day long.
But NOW I’m singing
Friday’s song!

Saturday, Saturday!
That’s today!
I’ll work on Saturday,
And I’ll play!
Yesterday is gone.
It’s done!
Yesterday I had some fun.
Tomorrow’s Sunday all day long.
But NOW I’m singing
Saturday’s song!
